The Preferment course

The eight weekly live sessions

Last updated: November 2026

The Preferment course meets once a week for eight weeks, with each live session led by Anne van Leynseele and working through her book chapter by chapter.

Rarified Life built the sessions as a structured path rather than a self-help pep talk. You read, you meet, you do the homework, and the following week builds on what you produced. By week eight you have moved through all six modules of the retirement life course.

How do the Preferment weekly sessions work?

Every week follows the same four-part rhythm, so you always know what comes next and where your effort goes.

  1. Read the chapter

Each week centers on a chapter of the Preferment book, the course companion text.

  2. Join the live session

Work through the chapter with Anne van Leynseele in that week’s live session.

  3. Do the homework

Complete the exercises built into the book between sessions. Real exercises, not busywork.

  4. Build on it next week

Bring what you worked out into the next session. Each week builds on the last.

Why live sessions instead of a self-paced class?

A room to start figuring it out in

The course listing makes a simple promise: you do not need a five-year plan, you just need a room to start figuring it out in. A weekly live session gives that room a fixed time. Many people who leave a long career lose the structure that kept them moving. The sessions replace a little of that structure while you build your own, which is exactly the job of the Accountability module later in the course.

Taught by the author

Anne van Leynseele wrote the book the course follows, so each chapter is discussed with the person who wrote it. Her own background spans four reinventions: a Los Angeles film and television production company she built and sold, digital strategy advising for Fortune 100 companies across three continents, a role as an Attorney Advisor in the Obama Administration, and helping write Washington State's legal framework for recreational cannabis. Today she co-owns an award-winning chocolate farm on the Big Island of Hawaii.

What to check before your first session

The Rarified Life course listing confirms eight weekly live sessions but does not publish session length, day of the week, time zone, or format. If those details matter for your schedule, check the Preferment course listing on rarifiedlife.com before you enroll. Plan time each week for reading and homework in addition to the live session itself.

Common questions

What happens in a weekly live session?
Each live session works through the Preferment book chapter by chapter with Anne. The session is where the material is discussed and the exercises you completed are put to work. The homework between sessions is where you apply the ideas to your own life, so the two halves depend on each other.
How long is the Preferment course?
The course runs for eight weeks. There is one live session with Anne van Leynseele each week, and each week builds on the one before it. Homework from the book is completed between sessions, so plan for some time outside the live sessions as well as the sessions themselves.
How many hours a week does the course take?
Rarified Life does not publish a weekly time estimate for the course. Plan for one live session each week plus time to read that week’s chapter and complete its exercises. Check the course listing on rarifiedlife.com for session details before you enroll so you can fit it around your week.
Are the sessions online or in person?
The course listing describes the sessions as live sessions with Anne but does not state the format or location. Check the Preferment course listing on rarifiedlife.com for format details before enrolling, especially if you travel often or live in a different time zone from the sessions.
What if I start the course and fall behind?
The course listing does not describe a policy for missed sessions. Because each week builds on the last, keeping up with the homework in the book matters. Check the course listing on rarifiedlife.com for any details on missed sessions before enrolling, and plan your eight weeks around known travel.
Do I need a five-year plan before I start?
No. The course listing says you do not need a five-year plan, you just need a room to start figuring it out in. The first module, Introduction, begins with where you are right now and why the old model of retirement was never built for someone like you.
